Job: Technical Director, Washington Direct Mail (WDM) Mailing House

When did you join WDM and what do you do?

“I’ve been working at Washington Direct Mail Mailing House for thirteen years full time.  I worked for my pocket money before that… I came to help out in the summer holidays from university and never looked back to be honest.  I’ve spent a bit of time in every department over the years but have settled in IT.

The main part of my job is looking after and developing all the hardware and software that we use across all aspects of the business. This includes our MIS, web to print and design software, personalised digital printing presses and direct mail fulfilment machinery. I still get involved in the creation of complex documents, with IT processes like automation and reporting and with business development.

I’m mainly office based using our MIS, planet press classic, planet press connect, adobe suite, Microsoft office, catfish and several mail sortation/data cleansing programs. I operate the digital presses and setup camera systems on the enclosing lines. I have a complete knowledge of all the fulfilment machinery as well.”

What do you like about the industry?

“No two days are ever the same. I can always strive to find an improvement in something we do.”

What do you like about working at WDM?

“I’m obsessive about doing things in the right way and always following good practice so I like to automate a process – build a workflow that requires the least amount of human interaction possible and completely eradicate the possibility of an error being made.

I also like a full audit trail which sounds sad [he laughs at this point] but it’s very satisfying when you’re trying to find some information about a job from long enough ago that you can’t remember and everything is recorded properly and can be accessed and understood immediately – it makes a huge difference to the way we work.”

Why should a customer use WDM?

“We are big enough to have the technical capability to match anybody in the country but small enough to still really care about all our clients and every job they give us, no matter how big or small.”

Hobbies

“Running and cycling – nothing unusual. Just started learning Spanish.”

Favourite Film or Music

“Love film and music but couldn’t possibly choose a favourite genre, let alone film or band.”

Guilty Pleasure

“Food and drink.”
