Ancient Sources for Direct Marketing
It’s stretching the truth to say that direct marketing existed at all throughout the ancient period but unsolicited requests from one person directly to another did exist throughout the Western World as we know and, with a stretch of the imagination, could be seen as ‘direct marketing’ by a modern definition. Each and every one had to be hand-written, and even the invention of printing in China during the eighth-century had a negligible impact outside Asia because the process and the specialists required were kept secret and protected. Only the capture of Chinese printers by a Turkic army enabled the spread of hand block printing throughout the Islamic World, and it would be a further six centuries before the process reached central Europe.
